Terms and conditions

This document sets out all details of terms and conditions relating to ordering, paying via invoice, shipping, things to be aware of if you are a customer from outside of the UK and refunds.

If anything is unclear always feel free to ask me and I will try to answer clearly to help you with your purchase.

Paintings, prints, cards, wooden doves and wooden hearts are all offered for sale from time to time on the artistintheshed website.

To buy currently all dealings are made directly via an email contact form on the web site. The contact form sends your requests and queries to my in-box directly and this is checked between 0800 GMT and 1500 GMT each day, Monday to Friday. if I launch a sale during a weekend then emails are also checked at the weekend.

I want to make the entire process of buying as easy and as enjoyable for you as I can. The details below are simply to outline the process and to clarify any questions you may have. Of course I am happy to answer additional questions if not outlined here so don’t hesitate to contact me about anything relating to buying from me.

Paintings on canvas

If you wish to purchase a painting you simply need to get in touch with me via the contact form.

I need your name and address and the name of the painting you would like to buy.

Paintings are marked for sale and details including the name of the painting, substrate (canvas or paper), painting size and media used to paint the work is included. All paintings are signed on the front unless otherwise indicated. Paintings are coated with a protective varnish. Most paintings are made on to deep edged canvases and the sides are painted white. The paintings all come ready to hang with a cord.

Once a painting has been selected and I have confirmed that the painting is still available for purchase I let you know the shipping cost and so long as you are happy I email you an invoice so you can make a secure payment method via Square. This enables you to pay me without having to share your card details.

Shipping is not included in the painting price unless otherwise stated but I let you know the cost of shipping and ensure that you are happy to pay before the invoice is sent to you.

Large paintings up to 30 x 30 inches are sent by Parcel Force in the UK. Currently this costs around £20 within the UK. To date I have had no issues with Parcel Force. The canvas paintings are sent in special canvas boxes from Kite Packaging especially designed to protect the painting. I wrap the paintings in bubble wrap before they are placed in the shipping box.

Paintings larger than 30 x 30 inches are significantly more expensive to ship as I can currently only purchase boxes up to 30 x 30 inches. For larger paintings I use Pack and Send, a specialist company that has an office in Bristol who collect the paintings from me, package securely and then ship to you, currently using DHL courier. This service is expensive but when you buy I get a quote from the Bristol office, check that you are happy with the price and add this price to your invoice. All invoices state painting price and shipping price separately.

All original paintings are sent tracked and a tracking number is emailed to you once the painting is on it’s way. I aim to pack up and ship your painting within 7 days of payment of invoice. Packaging and organising shipping takes time when you are a one person operation so please be patient with me. If for any reason I am unable to ship within seven days I will get in touch and let you know. You can also ask me to ship at a later date if you are going to be away from your home within the usual seven day period.

If you live reasonably locally I am always happy to make an appointment with you so that you can come to the studio to collect. This is definitely the best option if you are based in Bristol or nearby.

Paying in instalments

I am happy for you to pay in instalments if this makes it easier for you to budget for buying a painting. We draw up a contract by email that states the number of instalments and invoice dates. I then send you an invoice on the dates agreed that outline the instalment to pay, instalments paid to date and the balance owed. The painting will be sent to you once all instalments and shipping costs have been paid. Generally three monthly instalments is my preferred option but I am happy to negotiate with you and arrange something to suit us both. I want my paintings on your walls and I want to make the process easy and accessible to you.

Framing

Paintings on canvas are offered framed or unframed. The price on the web site is for unframed paintings. I can however arrange for your canvas painting to be framed in a simple tray frame by a framer I work with locally who does a beautiful job. I can quote for frames on an individual basis. My paintings are very vibrant and I recommend white wooden tray frames that set off the images really well. Framing takes a little longer as I need to book in time but I can usually give you a clear indication how long this will take so you have a good idea when you will receive your painting.

Paintings on paper

Paintings on paper are again subject to availability. As above with the canvas paintings check in with me via the contact form that the painting has not yet sold stating your name and address so that I can quote correctly for shipping. If the painting is available payment is via Square via email invoice allowing you to pay securely with a card. The paintings are usually offered in series and people on my mailing list are given access to a password protected web page 24 hours before everyone else. It really is worth signing up to my mailing and there is a form at the foot of this page to enable you to do this.

Paintings are shipped in the UK by Royal Mail tracked. Paper paintings are usually up to A3 size so I send these in a hard backed card envelope. First the paintings are placed into a cello bag for extra protection.

Paintings are shipped within seven days of invoice payment. If I am unable to fulfil this I will keep in touch so you know the approximate time of dispatch. In the past when releasing a series of 100 paintings it was quite difficult to keep up with the packing but I do my very best.

The tracking number is emailed to you once the painting is on its way.

I do not offer framing on paper paintings as with transportation of paintings with glass frames it is difficult to package without the risk of the frame breaking. People often ask me what works best. This is all down to your budget. If you can afford to go to a professional framer this gives you the widest range of options but standard frames also work well. I do think though that it is worth getting a mount cut to the right size. Most framers are happy to do this. They need the dimensions of the painting and the glazed area of the frame to do this. Many framers offer a range of budget off the peg frames. I always think my paintings look great in a white wooden frame with an ivory mount. It’s a classic finish that works with most interiors but of course this is very much down to personal choice.

Prints

Prints are ordered on demand. When you have selected the print you wish to buy email me using the contact form with the details of the image, size and whether you want the print made on to paper or canvas.

I will then invoice you by email using Square so that you can pay securely. Once the invoice is paid I order your print. Paper prints take up to a week and canvas prints around two weeks for the fine art print company I work with to make. The reason the canvas prints take time is because they have to be first printed and then varnished before being stretched onto a deep edged canvas frame. This is done by hand and takes time. The canvas prints are ready to hang. Paper prints are unframed.

Canvas prints are sent using canvas boxes from Kite Packaging. Paper prints are wrapped in cellophane and then carefully rolled into a robust postage tube sealed at each end.

Prints are sent tracked and the tracking number emailed to you once dispatched. Prints are sent Royal Mail tracked within the UK. Shipping cost is in addition to the print price.

Please note that I do not accept refunds on prints.

Cards

Cards are sent in a hard backed envelope first class. I only sell cards in sets of 5 and include five white envelopes. Currently there are two different sets to choose from. I do not use tracking on card shipping. If you are an international customer please check the shipping rates with me and I will quote. The web site shows the price to UK addresses including shipping but international shipping will be more than to the UK.

Please note that I do not accept refund for cards.

Wooden doves

Hand painted Wooden doves are offered on the artistintheshed web site approximately twice a year. I paint large flocks of birds in series but every single one is a unique work of art. These are usually snapped up very quickly and are offered via a password protected web page first to people who have subscribed to my mailing. This web page is opened up to everyone24 hours later after the mailing subscribers have made their choices.

Again get in touch via the contact form to buy and I will confirm if your choice is available and if it is a secure invoice will be sent to you.

Postage is by tracked Royal Mail for UK customers and the tracking number will be emailed to you once the painting has been dispatched. The doves are packaged in bubble wrap envelopes.

Wooden hearts -‘Happy Hearts’

Wooden hand painted hearts ‘Happy Hearts’ are  offered on the artistintheshed web site from time to time.I paint the hearts in series but every single one is a unique work of art.

Postage is by tracked Royal Mail for UK customers and the tracking number will be sent to you once the painting has been dispatched. The wooden hearts are wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed into a strong cello bag.

Dispatch is within seven days of invoice payment

International sales

I welcome international buyers but there are a few extra things that you need to be aware of when you buy from me if you live outside of the UK.

Please be aware that if you are an international customer that there may be customs fees, taxes and/or import duty to pay on the item you have purchased. You will be responsible for paying the fee. Sometimes the fee is requested up front before the item is released to you. I am not responsible for these fees.

I do not accept returns on international sales.

I do not currently accept commissions from international buyers.

International sales to the US are shipped using UPS. I have found to date that this company is very reliable. All sales to international buyers are sent tracked. International sales to the EU are sent Royal Mail tracked. I have an EORI number allowing me to sell within the EU. I am not able to accurately estimate fees that may be charged for import or customs duties or taxes within the EU.

Sometimes it can take quite some time for an international sale to arrive because the item gets held up in customs or there are delays with dispatch or courier/postage services in your country. This is beyond my control and I am not responsible for this delay. Please assume that an item may take time to reach you. Shipping times to the US for example have taken as little as four days to arrive but during the pandemic some things took two months. I just think it important to highlight this.

Commissions

From time to time I do agree to paint commissions and the details about how to commission me to paint for you can be found on the commissions page. Shipping and invoicing detail is the same as for the above detail in the canvas paintings section. I currently only accept commissions from UK customers. I do not accept returns or give refunds for commissions.

Difference of colour when buying from an image seen online

Please bear in mind that there may be small differences in the colours when you receive your artwork as images on tablets, phones and computers all vary to a degree. I take care to photograph all items for sale in natural daylight and try to ensure that the photographs I take are as close as possible to the colours of the original. There may however been some slight variation on the colour shown on your device. Generally the originals are much more vibrant than the images on your screen. No-one has to date complained that the colours in a painting did not closely meet with their expectations.

Refunds and returns

Of course I want you to be happy with your purchase. If damage occurs when you receive the item get in touch immediately and we will work out the best way to resolve.

Prints – I do not offer refunds on prints.

Refunds on originals – I only offer refunds on canvas paintings. If an original arrives and you decide that you do not want to buy you can return it to me. You will need to email me to let me know that you have changed your mind. You must do this within 7 days of receiving the painting. You will then need to pack the painting securely in the same packaging ( so long as it is undamaged ) or an equally secure packaging as that in which it was sent to you and return to me tracked using the same courier service that I used to send it to you at your own expense within seven days of receiving the painting. You will need to email the tracking number to me so that I know approximately when to expect it.

When I have received and inspected the painting and I am sure that it is still in  good enough condition to to offer for sale again I will issue a full refund minus the postage costs. If the painting has not been properly packaged if returned and gets damaged I cannot offer a refund. I will say here that no-one has ever returned an original painting to me as of writing this.

I do not offer refunds on wooden hearts or birds or small (up to A3 size) paintings on paper.
